Warts are caused by a virus – human papillomavirus (also known as HPV) to be precise. This virus causes unsightly skin growths. But you can get rid of warts with both over the counter and natural treatments.

Different variations of the HPV virus cause different types of warts.-

Common Warts are caused by HPV 2,4 and 7

Plantar Warts which appear on the side or bottom of the feet and are caused by HPV type 1

Genital warts are caused by over 30 types of HPV

Flat warts are small, round and smooth and appear in large groups and are caused by HPV type 3 and 10

Warts can be spread from infected skin to areas of unaffected skin (yours and others) by contact.

There are a number of over the counter treatments for warts which include freezing agents (commonly a mix of dimethyl ether and propane) or burning agents (salicyclic acid).

In severe cases Doctors may prescribe miquimod (an immune stimulant), Bleomycin which is injected into the warts, and canthardin (a chemical from the blister beetle).

Doctors may also remove warts using cryosurgery (freezing), electrocautery (electrical burning), lasar and surgical removal.

There are a number of natural treatments for warts including:

• Garlic you can apply garlic to the affected area and place a bandage over it daily. The garlic blisters the wart and it will fall off  
• Vinegar applied by bandage to the affected area will have the same effec  
• Dandelionsap applied to the affected area twice a day will mildly irritate the skin stimulating an immune response and resolving the warts.
