1. Cover it up

Covering the cold sore will help to prevent secondary bacterial infections and a simple smear of petroleum jelly can do the job effectively. However, covering the cold sore with make up is not to be recommended as the chemicals within the makeup may serve to irritate the cold sore further.

 



2. Change Your Tooth Brush

Toothbrushes can harbor the cold sore virus and you should change your toothbrush once the sore appears and again when it disappears to avoid your toothbrush being a source of re-infection

3. Use Sunscreen

Cold sores can reappear as a direct result of overexposure to the sun and to prevent this, when out in the sun, protect your lips with a  sunscreen designed for lips with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 20. Some lipsticks also contain sun screen

4. Don’t Touch

Do not touch a cold sore (or pick it or squeeze it) as further damaging the lip will leave it open to secondary bacterial infections and you also may spread the cold sores to previously unaffected areas

 

5. Pain Relief

Over the counter anti inflammatory medications (such as aspirin can be used when the sold sore  is painful

 

6. Ice It

Applying ice to the cold sore has a pain relieving affect and seems to speed up Cold Sore resolution

7. Avoid Triggers


Remember that the cold sore virus remains within the body after the coild sore has resolved and so avoid triggers to prevent recurrence. Different triggers cause cold sores to recur in differnet pople. Triggers to avoid include
Fever 

  • Infection, colds and flu    
  • Ultraviolet radiation (excessive exposure to the sun and sunburn)   
  • Stress   
  • Fatigue    
  • Changes in the immune system    
  • Trauma (direct traumatic injuries to the lips)   
  • Food allergies    
  • Dental work  

To help avoid some of these triggers, practice stress reducing techniquea like exercise, meditation, yoga or reading.  Avoid acidic and salty foods like potato chips or citrus fruits as they can further irritate cold sores and add to the pain.

 

8. Licorice

Glycyrrhizic acid, an ingredient in licorice, kills the cold sore virus -- so try chewing a licorice whip. Just be sure it's made from real licorice.If the ingredient list reads "licorice mass," the product contains real licorice. licorice powder can be sprinkled on the sore

9. Milk
Soak a cotton ball in milk and apply it to the sore to relieve pain. Applying milk to the affected area before the blister appears and when you first feel the tingling can help speed the healing right from the beginning.

 

10. Zinc Lozenges

Cold sores may be triggered by stress. During stressful times, sucking on zinc lozenges can boost the immune system.


11. Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel has anti viral effects and when you first feel the tingling of a cold sore starting apply Witch Hazel to the site.  Apply Witch Hazel frequently, and healing time is shortened to a fraction of normal healing time.

12. Tea Bags

Tea has an astringent and antibacterial effect and warm wet tea bags applied to the cold sore can be effective

13. Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid (essential amino acids come from food sources as our bodies cannot manufacture them itself) and it is used to make the  proteins we need to produce infection-fighting antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and body tissues. Lysine has been found to inhibit the spread of the herpes simplex virus. Lysine supplements and lysine ointments are both effective as cold sore cures.

 

14. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has strong  antiviral properties.and when used on cold sores regularly, it has been found to decrease the frequency of recurrences. Lemon balm is easy to grow and you can grow it in your garden or on your winndowsill for a year round supply.

15. Reishi & Astragalus

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a type of mushroom that has a long been used in traditional Asian medicine to strengthen the immune system. Taken daily it inhibits the spread of cold sores. It is frequently combined with a herb called astragalus which has been found to  improve immune function.
