Eczema is a broad inclusive term for a range to skin conditions
causing inflammation of the epidermis. Because of the range of conditions that fall into the broad term
eczema, there are a huge number of treatments. But there are also eczema natural treatments which are equally
successfull in the treatment of a range of eczemas.
Atopic
eczma – this is an allergic disease which is believe to
have a hereditary component and it commonly runs in families who are also prone to asthma and hay fever. This
form of eczema shows as an itchy rash on the head, scalp, neck, insides of elbows, and behind the knees. This
type of eczema is common in developed countries and the incidence is rising.
Allergic
Contact Dermatitis – this results from a delayed reaction
to some form of allergen e.g. nickel
Irritant
Contact Dermatitis – this results from the skin contacting
some type of irritant substances eg detergents
Xerotic
Eczema – this is a dry skin condition in which the skin
become so dry that the condition turns to eczema. This is common in older people and the skin looks cracked
and broken.
Seborrhoeic
Dermatitis – commonly known as cradle cap in infants and
is a condition closely related to dandruff. In cradle cap this condition seems to be related to a lack of
biotin
There are a range of less common forms of eczema –Autoeczematization, Discoid Eczema,
Venous Eczema, Dermatitis Herpetiformis, Neurodermatitis
Treatment of dermatitis includes a
range of medications
Cortocosteriods
are commonly used, but these are not a cure, rather they surpress the symptoms and control the eczema.
Prolonged use of corticosteroids has significant medical risk and side
effects.
Immunomodualtors
– these treatments affect the immune system in the affected areas and have shown better results than
corticosteroids in many cases. However, the US FDA, currently has a public health advisory in regard to
the increased incidence of lymph node cancer when using these drugs. However, many professional medical
organisations disagree with these findings.
Antibiotics are
used when the eczema allows bacterial infection to enter the
epidermis.
Immunosupressants
can be used in very severe cases of eczema, and are very successfull in severe cases, But careful
monitoring is required and regular blood tests must be taken when using immunosuppressant treatment
because of the risk of side effects.
Antihistamines
are often used for itch relief
Both allergic and
contact dermatitis are treatable by identifying the allergen or irritant substance and removing it from
the environment of the sufferer.
